September: personal updates and updated submission deadlines for publications paying 5¢/word or higher

Greetings my fellow fiction fans and writerly types,

I realized that my motivation was dropping significantly due to a number of factors, one of which was trying to sort out enough paying work in my side jobs (mostly teaching and voice acting at the moment, and working on starting up a gig with a business partner) as well as an inability to focus due to too much happening at once. Other reasons included summer heat, time with family, video games, and novel reading. With a promising story, I'm struggling through, a fellow writer helped me get back on track by reminding me "What would Kowal do?" which helped me simplify my story, or at least focus it. I've done a ton of research into Japanese and Filipino mythologies for one of my current stories, as well as research into the use of masks, immigration politics, online bullying, trans identity, and more. Love the story, but it will be a hard one to wrap up. Probably means it's one of my better ones.

In August, I got a minor personal from Clarkesworld, but the next publication I sent the story to didn't go for it, so the process continues without any successes to report yet. I did manage to wrap up an application for a novel grant, which included a summary/pitch of the novel, samples of the work, and the general reasoning behind the grant application. It was nice to touch base with my novel writing again. Sadly, I missed the submission deadline for the Grimdark for newbie writers contest (Matthew War Pay It Forward Writing Competition). The deadline was 9/4. I really wanted to enter that, but I just didn't have the proper story ready and/or available. Maybe next year if I haven't gotten published yet.

Personal Goal of 100 Rejections in 2020 (current stats)
2020  Rejections: 61 (36 short, 23 flash, 2 poems)
Pending: 16 (13 short, 2 flash, 1 novel grant app)
                Total 2020 Submissions:  77

With this post, I'm only updating the deadlines that pay 5¢/word or higher. Those are the only ones I'm paying attention to in my current submission rounds.

I noticed some September deadlines missing from my submission deadlines list, so I've added them in here. I added Escape Pod and PseudoPod. For those publications paying 5¢/word or higher, these are the ones coming up in September (see further details below), Multiplicity of Stories (due tomorrow), Fantasy Magazine (fantasy), Cossmass Infinities (SF/F for under-represented authors), Nightmare Magazine (horror, dark fantasy), Flame Tree Flash Fiction Contest, Upon a Once Time (fairy tale mashups; ending early), Flame Tree's Terrifying Ghosts story call, Reckoning (environmental), Incoming Magazine (comic pitches), Writers of the Future Quarter 4 (any spec), PodCastle (Fantasy), Escape Pod (SF), Future Science Fiction Digest (positive East Asia SF), and Ombak (South East Asian writers only).

Coming up in October is another Fantasy Magazine window, Cossmass Infinities (SF/F, all authors), PseudoPod (Horror/Weird), an Unmasked anthology, and the Dream Foundry Contest (any spec; for new/unpublished writers). Also note the anthologies that have opened up with windows closing at the end of December: Cemetery Media Gates Untitled Flash Anthology (various Horror themes), Lost Contact (Horror/Weird),  three anthologies from Zombies Need Brains seeking god/goddess stories, ship stories, and cultures in conflict stories. Also, The Wild Hunt anthology is still open until early next year.
